DATA DUMPS: Fire and Fury

Key Points
Fire Awareness Program and Visits:
Naenae College frequently referred students to FENZ's Fire Awareness Intervention Program to educate those who had engaged in concerning fire-related behaviors. The school and FENZ worked closely to arrange these sessions.
FENZ representatives, especially Paul Carline, visited the school multiple times to deliver fire safety talks and work with referred students. The school was very appreciative of FENZ's efforts.
In 2020, planned visits had to be put on hold or adjusted due to COVID-19 restrictions. Alternative options like providing educational materials or conducting sessions virtually were discussed.
False Fire Alarms:
The school experienced issues with students maliciously activating fire alarms. FENZ delivered educational sessions to 9(2)(a) on the seriousness of false alarms. The school reported the number of false alarms dropped significantly after these efforts.
Evacuation Planning:
In 2021, the school worked on updating their evacuation plan. They consulted with FENZ representatives Peter Thompson and Stuart Law to get feedback and suggestions. Considerations included students needing extra assistance and the placement of evacuation chairs.
Student Visits to Fire Station:
Some students, like 9(2)a , visited local fire stations like Avalon after school. This seems to have been arranged as a positive learning experience related to the Fire Awareness Program.

Hi Tania, I have been told to work from home. The books I have I could drop off but they relate more to fire setting rather than operating manual fire points. Perhaps a Skype session from my home if i can get the computer here to do it or just a phone conversation meeting with the 9(2)(a) students and a separate one with the 9(2)(a) student.
You would need to have an adult with the students whilst I was having this meeting with them. It would not be the full FAI Programme but it would be beneficial to the students re their behaviour.
What are your thoughts. Thanks Paul.

Kia ora ano Paul,
I've worked on the plan, and its a bit trickier to get less than 50 and deliver the programme over 3 sessions. We do have a number of absences each day, but 2 of the groups would be closer to 60. Is this okay?
Thanks Fiona

We would like to organise sessions for the 9(2)(a) like you did with the if possible. We only have 165, so assuming there are some absences, we would likely only need 3 sessions. Half an hour right? Would you be happy to go back to back with 10 mins in between? It would mean we could do them from 9am till 10:50 any day you're available (excluding Thursdays).
Many thanks Fiona

Hi Megan, sorry I missed you the other day at the end of the session. Your students were great to work with. Thank you for allowing me to return and work with the last class. They interacted well and I believe they have taken on board the messages offered especially on operating the fire alarm manual points.
Looking at our records, those Malicious Calls to the college have dropped off. Hopefully this will continue.
I am always available if required. Stay safe.

Re. Unmanned Aircraft (Drone) Flights
Good afternoon Nic,
My name is Grant Bristow and I am an Operational Officer for Fire and Emergency New Zealand based here in Lower Hutt, with my day-to-day activities run usually from Seaview Fire Station in the Seaview industrial area.
Part of my job is also involvement with our local Unmanned Aircraft Systems, (UAS), or drones as most will know them by. One of our roles is to conduct aerial mapping of sites such as yours for prior intelligence gathering purposes should the worst-case scenario ever happen. The survey would involve the collection of imagery by the Unmanned Aircraft and would only be used for the purpose for which it is collected.
All Fire and Emergency New Zealand UAS operations are conducted under the authority of a Part 102 Unmanned Aircraft Operator Certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand. Fire and Emergency New Zealand pilots hold a current pilot certificate for this particular discipline.
Given this information, would you and your friendly staff be happy for us to conduct flights at a time and day appropriate to yourselves in order to gain this imagery? At this stage, we would hopefully be looking at a Sunday when there would be no/ very few people on the school grounds, (weather permitting). This helps with our compliance as well as providing a better safety buffer should any issues arise with the craft.
If requested, we can also provide you with a usb drive of 2D footage of your school.
I’m happy to discuss this further should you have any questions or queries and can be contacted during the
day on cell. 9(2)a
Kind Regards,
Grant Bristow
